The extensive and profound Chinese traditional pattern culture contains wide theme and varied model, which also can illustrates far-reaching meaning. During the long river of pattern culture history, the butterfly culture gets the favor of the ancients due to its variety forms and unique spiritual connotation. From the Neolithic original “butterfly implements”, the loving story of “Shanbo Liang and Yingtai Zhu”, the philosophical views that purposed by Zhuangzi in the Warring States Time and the poetry, painting, clothing and artwork during Song and Qing dynasty, the using of butterfly element has never stop.In general, butterfly pattern own its unique state in the traditional Chinese culture which commonly dominate by “dragon and phoenix” but there are less investigation of butterfly pattern in jewelry design. Thus, it’s very meaningful for studying the development history, the application in design and the cultural connotation in ancient art. We consider that using butterfly pattern in jewelry design which can express the aesthetic way of traditional culture, will give more presentation method and display room to jewelry design.In this study, the source of butterfly image and the beauty of artistic conception of butterfly image, which can only be sensed but not be expressed in word, have been discussed in detail according to its application in poetry, painting and artwork. On the other hand, the classification of ancient butterfly image in design and the development of the image in jewelry design have been concluded in detail. Meanwhile, combine with some design example that designed by famous jewelry designer in China, we try to express the beauty of imagery of butterfly and find the balance between non-traditional machining process and butterfly image.
