English-Chinese Translation Of Metaphors In Political&Economic Texts

As a means of figure of speech, metaphor is typically viewed as characteristic of language alone, a matter of words rather than thought or action. However, metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action. The conversion of research on metaphors from the rhetoric perspective to the cognitive linguistics provides a brand new perspective on metaphor translation study. In order to find appropriate translating strategies for different types of metaphors, it is necessary for translators to view the cultural connotation of metaphors from the cognitive view when dealing with metaphor translation.Domestic studies on metaphors are mostly concentrated in literary texts, while only a few studies are focusing on metaphors in political and economic texts. There is no doubt that along with the implementation of the "One Belt, One Road" initiative, political and economic texts will become more and more important, thus we should pay more attention to these texts. Based on two foreign research reports related to China’s "One Belt, One Road" Strategy, this paper explores the English-Chinese translating method and strategy of metaphors in political and economic texts. It can be concluded that there are three basic strategies for metaphors in these texts:reproducing the same image in the TL; replacing the image in the SL with a standard TL image; deletion. In addition, it is founded that due to the characteristics of the political and economic texts, the strategy of reproducing the same image in the TL is mostly used, while on the whole, it is relatively flexible for translators to choose which strategy to use.
