On The Translation Strategies Of Western Works On China Studies

This report is based on the translation work of the book A Daoist Theory of Chinese Thought—A Philosophical Interpretation by Chad Hanson, an American sinologist. The book is a sinological work and mainly discusses the great thinkers of ancient China and their doctrines. The translated text is selected from the first chapter of the book The Positive Dao Period, which presents basic Confucian doctrines. In the process of translation, the translation strategy of domestication, which is commonly applied in the translation of sinological works, is extensively conducted. The report basically demonstrates how domestication translation strategy is employed, especially in the rendering of culture-rich text.The report mainly illustrates, with ample and relevant examples, how domestication translation strategy functions in the translation of sinological works. To demonstrate the application of the translation strategy of domestication,the examples are analyzed from three levels: lexis, syntax and texts. In this way, the report attempts to further illustrate the application of relevant translation techniques under the guidance of domestication translation theory and strategy. In the last part, the report analyzes the instructive functions of domestication in the translation of analogy-rich texts with specific examples. This report aims to provide a new perspective on the application of domestication strategy in the rendering of sinological works into Chinese.
