A Translation Report On Translation, History And Culture — A Sourcebook (Excerpts)

Translation, History and Culture―A Sourcebook was edited by the well-known American scholar André Lefevere. This collection spans approximately twenty centuries from the 106 BC to the 1931 AD, and contains what many consider to be some of the most important or at least the most seminal texts produced over centuries of thinking about translation in Western Europe. My translation material selected from the collection is ―On the Different Methods of Translating‖ with 11, 208 words written by German philosopher and translator Friedrich Schleiermacher.This report sums up some translation skills through the analysis at the lexical and syntactic level, and discusses whether these skills are available for the further translation practice from the perspective of the theories such as Skopostheorie, translation shift, functional linguistics, dynamic equivalence and comparative linguistics. The report includes four chapters. Chapter One gives a general description of the task, including the introduction to the book and the author, the analysis of the material and the reason of selecting the material. Chapter Two is the process description which consists of preparation before translation, while-translating, and modification and proof-reading. Chapter Three is an essential part, of which the focus is on the discussion of word and sentence translation based on the translation practice. And types of problems encountered in the translation practice are analyzed from the perspective of different theories. The last Chapter is a summary part. It describes the difficulties and inspirations from the practice and also puts forward the expectation toward the future study.
