Anyue Grotto is rich in content with artistically excellent. It is a treasure of the Southern gotto arts and provides visual historical data about the history, cultural costumes and Buddhism in ancient China. Anyue Grotto was started to be chiseled in Tang Dynasty and reached its prime time in Song Dynasty. Along with the spread and development of Buddhism and localization, unique grotto statuaries were gradually formed by collision of the current society and history, artistic pursuit and aesthetic thoughts. The geographical conditions of innumerable mountains and valleys, social tradition of “officers more than civilians”, the monk beliefs and folk beliefs were combined together and reflected on the Buddhist art of the Anyue Grotto.In this paper, the research status of foreign and domestic grottoes is listed in details; on the basis of knowing the protection conditions and theoretical research of foreign and domestic grottoes, the topic of Buddha figure costume feature study is put forward. On the research background of history, society and age, the research significance of this topic is demonstrated. As the paper’s focus, Anyue Grotto has its art introduction and changes with time be presented. By referring to theories of sociology, history, folklore and aesthetics, from the combined angel of theory study and empirical analysis, the Buddha costume features is researched and analyzed so as to deepen the understanding of Anyue grotto Buddha and attract the society’s attention to Buddha costume and cultural heritage for consequent scientific repair, reasonable protection and creative development.There are five parts all together in this paper. In the first part, detailed introduction on the art condition of Anyue Grotto Buddha costumes is provided mainly from three aspects of physic-geographical environment, social and historical origins and religious culture origin so as to give a macroscopic angle on the art of Anyue Grotto Buddha costumes. In the second part, on the basis of comparison, the differences between Anyue Grotto and other grottos are highlighted and the historical, cultural and territorial reasons for its otherness and peculiarity. In the third part, three historical periods as the birth period, glorious period and decline stage are classified for changes of Anyue Grotto Buddha costumes along with the changes of time. In the fourth part, Anyue Grotto Buddha costumes are analyzed from the perspective of aesthetics. By comparing the Buddha costume style changes along with time in different periods of Anyue Grotto and other grottos, analyze its changes and features. In the fifth part, by combing history and reality, depth analysis is performed on the value of Anyue Grotto costumes and the influence of Anyue Grotto on grotto statuaries is researched.Anyue Grotto is the product of specific territory and culture and Buddha is artwork embedded with humanity and Buddha nature and its statues and costume reflect the character emotion and regional culture. The combination of skirts, right unlined shirt, monk’s underwear and cassock are formed into graceful and light costume, which not only the presentation of religious emotion, but also the implication of culture and art. In this paper, on the basis of exploring and analyzing the Anyue Grotto Buddha costume, the historical and cultural connotation of Anyue Buddha costume is interpreted for understanding the authentic existence and realistic value of religiousphilosophy under the condition of Harmonious Society and inheriting grotto art and spirit of Chinese nation.
