In 1935, Han River suffered the worst cataclysm in a century, which led to the deaths and injuries of people in the middle and lower reaches of Han River. It was a unprecedented calamity. This article makes a comprehensive research on the cataclysm of Han River in 1935 and the salvation of it, and then investigates some related problems.This article is divided into five parts, except the introduction and conclusion.The introduction part briefly explains the content and significance of the topic, and introduces the researches in recent years on the cataclysm in 1935. On the basis of previous researches, it also states the research method and thought of this article.Chapter one is based on historical materials, and summarizes the origin of Han River and the process of its change- from the “mother river “ to “harmful river”. This chapter makes a classification and summary of some features of Han River, such as its embankment, watercourse and hydrology. On this basis, it sums up the situation of the flood in Yunyang, Xiangyang and other areas of middle and lower reaches of Han River.Chapter two states the historical background of cataclysms in Han River, and analyzes the causes of the cataclysm in 1935. The geographic position is one of the causes, but actually the main cause is the bad social internal economic conditions.In chapter three, it summarizes the influence of this cataclysm on the economy and society of Hubei province. In the nationwide statistics of affected cities, damage areas, the number of victims and property damage of the year, Hubei ranked the first. Among the 52 cities which suffered from the cataclysm in Hubei province, the cities in Han River basin suffered great losses. So, it is evident that the disaster brought huge damage to these areas.Chapter four investigates the relief activities in the whole country. Nanjing National Government and some local governments had to adopt a series of relief measures for the stability of the people. The private or social aid groups and businessmen also played an important role in the disaster relief and the post-disaster reconstruction.Chapter five focuses on the rehabilitative measures of the cataclysm. After the disaster, the government provided a large sum of money to repair the embankments along the coast. As a result, the famous embankment called Yao in Zhongxiang was built. At the same time, the government actively urged the agricultural improvement, and vigorously promoted the American cotton.As the postscript part, the conclusion sums up the features of the cataclysm of Han River in 1935, and make a conclusion. Only the government pays attention to the development of water conservancy and the river training, then establishes and improves the relief system, can the economic society of China develop continuously and healthily.
