This report is based on the translation of Chapter One and Three from Career in Psychology: Opportunities in a Changing World. According to Peter Newmark’s Text-Typology, the selected material is an informative text that should be translated under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory. Therefore, guided by the Theory, the writer adopts some translation methods including conversion, addition, deletion, division and synthesization in the process of translation. Meanwhile, the writer tries to take into full consideration the reader’s cultural background, reception habits as well as cognitive competence to reach the best communicative effect. The report first introduces the translation task including the background, object, significance and the analysis of source text. Secondly, the translation process is discussed, including the preparation before translating, Communicative Theory and the proofreading after translating. In the translation process, the translator pays great attention to detecting and specifying latent meaning, and adopts methods like supplementation, omission, substitution, and division and integration of sentences in the source text. Problems of person and mood are also handled properly according to text genres. By deeply analyzing the source text and the various translation methods adopted under the guidance of the Theory, this report aims to offer some referential value to the translation of this kind of informative text. The last part overviews the experience and lessons gained and the problems to be solved.
