| With its long history in China, biography has gained lots of attentions as time goes by, so has the translation of biography. Therefore, Portrait of a Genius, But…was taken as the research object. Richard Aldington, the author of the book, was D. H. Lawrence?s good friend. He was an imagist. The life of Lawrence, the genius was recorded in his poetic language. Lots of works were produced during his short life. There were some sex descriptions in his books which were banned by government, so he became one of the most disputed writers.Biology was a kind of authentic and literary form. Thus lots of attentions were gained increasingly. Newmark?s semantic and communicative translation made great breakthroughs compared with literal translation and free translation. And it guided the future translation work. Semantic translation focused on the author, and aimed at the precise translation of the styles of the original work. While communicative translation centralised the target language readers and targeted at their understanding of the foreign culture. Under the instruction of Newmark?s semantic and communicative translation strategy, Portrait of a Genius, But…was taken as an example. According to the problems occurred in the translation process, proper solutions were found. With the help of semantic translation, the religious information, social conditions, Greek and Roman methology and literature heros were rendered into Chinese in a proper way to spread the foreign culture. The obstacles of Chinese readers would be removed by communicative translation. Only in this way, can readers know the hero of the biography exactly and decrease the misunderstanding of him or her. For poetries, the combination of semantic and communicative translation was applied for the readers to better understand the art of poetry. |
