Subordinate to S&T style, Chinese TBM project construction method statement has its unique features as well as such common features as linguistic norms, complain rhetoric and specified terminology of the category. Construction method statement is also characterized by its abundance of sentences without subjects. In the translation of this type of text into English for Chinese enterprises’ overseas projects, the translating of Chinese sentences without subjects is the most difficult job. Sentence without subject is a unique construction in Chinese language. According to English grammar, a subject is an indispensible part of a sentence with only a few exceptional whereas in Chinese, a sentence doesn’t necessarily need a subject to make it complete and comprehensible. Such difference between Chinese and English sentence structure makes it tougher for the translator to produce a high-quality translation. Therefore, during the English translation of Chinese hydroelectric project Construction method statement, the first problem the translator met is to identify the Chinese sentence without subject since it’s still a controversial issue in Chinese language. In terms of definition, sentences without subjects refer to those which emphasize actions of doing and changing instead of the doers, delivering complete information without relying on the context. Firstly, the translator considers all the sentences emphasizing action as sentences without subjects and divides them into the three following categories: subject-less sentences, sentences with subjects omitted, sentences with subjects shifted. Secondly, the translator analysizes three primary functions of sentences without subjects, on the basis of which brings forth three translation principles: information equivalency, the principle of economy and readability. Finally, the translator not only reviews the strategies introduced by others but summarizes her own translating techniques adopted in the translation of the study material, five pieces of strategies resulted. The translation review of this paper is the special study for sentences without subjects in which the author has some findings. Most sentences without subjects in the Chinese hydroelectric project construction method statement fall into subject-less ones with different pragmatic function. Accordingly different types of English sentences should be translated into. For example, sentences functioning strong instruction and imperativeness are suggested to be translated into English imperative sentences; sentences functioning indirect demand or facts stating are mostly suggested to be translated into English passive sentences; sentences functioning existence are suggested to be translated into sentences initiated by “there be”. And other sentences may be ideal matches of English common sentence patterns. As for sentences with subjects omitted and shifted, generally subjects must be added from the context to the corresponding English sentences, passive or active. Of course, the translation strategies are not immune to but subsume each other.
