In recent years, the term New-Century Literature is widely used in academic circles to define the fractured diversion of the literature history that occurred at the end of last century. However, from the author’s point of view,New Century Literature, as a totally new writing style and existing form in the history of contemporary literature, is inseparable from the picturized context where the whole China entered at the end of 20 th century. The new in New-Century Literature is entering as a kind of picturized experience. Thus the diversion of picturization in new-century literature, especially in new-century novels is becoming an important perspective to understand the characteristics, mechanism, and existing form of new-century literature. The external features that can be perceived by our intuitive feelings are presented by the diversion of picturization in new-century novels as three points. The first diversion is the presentation form —— from text monologue to the intertextuality of text and picture. Although there exist works in form of illustration in modern novels,as for the relationship between picture and text, the text is dominant while the picture is supplementary. In some novels of recent years, the picture begins to occupy the dominant position. The second one is writing resource —— from direct experience to indirect experience. The resources in traditional novels are mostly based on the writer’s personal experience and life accumulation. However, in the picturized era, more resources in the novels come from the symbols and images spread by various media, the cross-regional flow of images, movies, television, computer games, the Internet and so on. The third one is the media environment —— from print writing to screen writing. The traditional novels rely on print media and bear strong written cultural characteristics while new-century novels prefer to relying on the media environment formed by a variety of new media and show electronic cultural characteristics that are adapted to the new media environment. The features manifested by the diversion of picturization in new-century novels within the text are as follows. The narrative mode changes from chronological narration to spatial narration. Traditional novels focus on the unfolding of plots with time clues and pay attention to the integrity and strictness of linear time logic. Nevertheless, part of the novels in picturized era lay emphasis on the scenario-based narrative, which embodies a large span of time and space and even dispels the linear time logic in the form of time-travel novels. The characterization of logic diverts from imagery to simulacra, from realism to virtualism, and from metaphor to presentation. The theme settings vary from the elite to the secular, from concept to body, and from thought expression to desire appeal. In terms of narrative approach and sensory cognition,new-century novels are not only the change of paradigm, but also the change of concept, and even the notable change of cultural logic. The effect of reception alters from readable to visible, from charm to shock. The style characteristics differ from the model of depth to the spectacle, planarization and non-historicization.The flourish of the image culture has brought unprecedented development opportunity for the literature and great adjustments and changes have taken place in the mode of production, the aesthetic style and the mode of operation. This thesis reflects on the deficiencies of the existing theories of literary interpretation and the consequences of the diversion of picturization in new-century novels, and probes into the future trends of the diversion of picturization in new-century novels.
