It is the opening chapter of academic study on the epic songs of Miao minority in Xiangxi, the western part of Hunan Province. In this study, these old folk songs, according to their themes, are categorized into three varieties, depicting genesis, migration and life respectively. By analyzing the content of these songs, we discuss the themes in details one after another, in the process of which we are accessible to the inner world demonstrated in and then investigate the spiritual value implied in these Miao’s old folk songs.Although there exist some similarities between the genesis of Miao and that of Han, we believe that the former more embodies their efforts of strengthening the nation’s cohesive forces than is just the record of their ancestors creating the universe. When talking about the issue of migration, we find that folk singers aim to pass on to their future generations the spirits of being tenacious, positive and aggressive by depicting their rough journey in these epic songs. Finally, in the songs around the theme of life, it is demonstrated that the indoctrination of the Miao folks is more largely recorded than the description of social life itself.Seeking the roots of culture is nothing but exploring the corner we have ignored, the soul of nation. Pushed by the overwhelming floods of seeking culture roots, we hope to awaken the world’s confidence in the history and culture of minorities in China, through the investigation of the epic songs of Miao in Xiangxi in this study. Therefore, we need not only to inherit but also further develop the ancient traditional cultures by injecting fresh energy, so as to enhance people’s cognitive confidence around China.
