Due to their distinctive language features, it is inevitable that there are differences between Chinese and English in textual cohesion. In general, some cohesive devices used commonly in English are also popular in Chinese. However, their usage method and use frequency are quiet different in these two languages. The cohesive distinction between source language and target language requires that the translator should make some adjustments accordingly to make sure the expressions maintain logical consistency and semantic coherence, reproducing the textual coherence of the original text. The theory of textual cohesion offers significant theoretical foundation to make cohesive adjustments in English-to-Chinese translation. The concept of textual cohesion is raised by Halliday and Hasan who divide it into two categories:grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. After Halliday and Hasan, a great number of scholars such as Hu Zhuanglin, Zhu Yongsheng, Li Yunxing and Zhang Delu propose their own opinions and further develop the textual cohesion theory.Based on the discourse cohesion theory, this report aims to explore and summarize several cohesive adjustments in English-to-Chinese translation by systematically analyzing the cohesive devices in The Presidents Fact Book, hoping to be helpful in relevant researches.
