A Practice Report Of Consecutive Interpretation Of Chinese Idiom Stories

As a means of communication, interpreting makes a better information transmission and understanding among people with different background, languages and culture. In recent years, the upsurge of learning Chinese is springing up all over the world. Being taken from fables or historical stories, Chinese idioms have become fixed expressions of language in their long-term usage. Thus foreigners often have many difficulties in learning them. It has become a challenge for translators in decoding the cultural essence of these idioms.This thesis is done under the guidance of the Skopos theory proposed by the German scholar Hans Vermeer, mainly involving a summary of a sample consecutive interpreting of twenty-eight household Chinese idioms and the stories behind them chosen from Youku. Based on personal knowledge and experiences in interpreting, the author of this report focuses on the common difficulties and emphases of translating Chinese idioms into English as well as some possible corresponding strategies. Through the analysis of the problems in the process of pre-interpreting preparation and interpreting, the author finally summarizes some of her shortcomings and also offers some solutions to them, hoping the findings in the report might provide some guidance to the MTI study in the future.
