| With the rapid development of global economy, the cross-cultural communication among various nations becomes increasing and it is significant to have the proper means to transmit the cultural elements to enhance mutual understanding and facilitate the cross-cultural communication, and mutual merging. However, whether the target readers understand properly the cultural images transmitted in the translation works depends on the degree of the intertextuality of translation of cultural images, which is one of the key factors of stimulating cross-cultural communication among different nations. In fact, the cultural images are not only a language phenomenon, but a meaningful means of delivering cultural elements and information among all kinds of nations. Therefore, it is important to adopt proper translation strategies to translate cultural images. This paper aims to make a research on the translation strategies of cultural images in some literature translations from the perspective of intertextuality theory by studying the Islam religious cultural images in the novel The Kite Runner as a starting point to analyze some typical examples in two different versions translated by Li Jingyi and Li Jihong, discussing the characteristics of translation strategies used in the two versions. Hence such a conclusion can be drawn that, in the translation of cultural images, the translation strategies of domestication and foreignization should not be understood as the extreme points on a scale because they are on the continuum of translation strategies, as well as it depends on the purposes of the translation to enhance the target readers? understanding of the original works which are the products of concrete cultural contexts. This paper includes six chapters: the first chapter is an introduction; the second one is literature review on The Kite Runner both at home and abroad as well as the historical study in definition and categories of cultural images; the third one is the introduction to intertextuality theory, which explains that the translation process itself is a kind of intertextuality and that the function will be exerted by intertextuality in cultural images translation; the fourth one deals with the research design in which the research questions and methodology(description and comparison) are stated, as well as the research data are shown by collection in tables; the fifth one shows the kernel part of this paper by analyzing the translation of cultural images comprehensively by means of some typical examples with the result of inducing the basic strategies to translate cultural images; the last chapter is a conclusion which points out that the translation of cultural images is confined by the differences in language and culture. Due to the disparate cultural contexts the translators live in, if the translators adopt the different translation strategies, various effects will be exerted on transmission of intertextuality of cultural images. That is to say, if the cultural images of the source language are similar to those of the target language and the translators adopt domestication, it will deepen the cultural images; when it comes to the translation of cultural images on rhetorical level, if the translators use foreignization, it will maintain the cultural images; if the translators adopt the combined strategies of domestication and foreignization, it can make the cultural images transmit better from the source language to the target language.Accordingly, to meet the needs of cultural exchange among various ethnic groups, the translators should try their best to do well at least in the following two aspects: on one hand, the translators should improve their own cultural appreciative ability by constant efforts; on the other hand, the translators should adopt the combined strategies of domestication and foreignization so as to transmit the cultural images of the source text in a better way and enhance the cultural communication among people around the world. |
