Report On E-C Translation Of The Chagai Porphyry Copper Belt, Baluchistan Province, Pakistan An Excerpt From Economic Geology

With the development of science and technology, scientific English is playing a more and more significant role in spreading the science and technology. This practical E-C translation report, based on the characteristics of scientific articles, analyses the features of the geological English. Guided by the Skopos Theory on Translation, and by the principle of faithfulness and fluency, this report analyzes the difficulties in translating such English articles into Chinese and attempts to explore solutions to tackle these propblems. Being one branch of the science, the geological science describes objective facts with nomal language and formal modal. Therefore, it is of such feartures as normality, formality, specialty and logiscaraslity. While translating, the author encounters many diffulities, among which the major ones are the terms and sentences. Because the terms are professional and in various forms, as well as the sentences are usually of numerous nominalized structures, prepositional phrase, and complex structures. According to the principle of faithfulness and frequency, the author tried to use transliteration and literal translation strategies for terms. In terms of the sentences, the author attempt to use liner translation, division, and synthetic approach, by retrieving internets, and referring to dictionaries and parallel texts.In spite of these, the author should exactly understand the meaning of each term, and rightly analyze the grammar and logic of each sentence. Then by integrating the above methods, the author transfers these sentences from English to Chinese in idiomatic Chinese ways. In terms of the passive sentences, the author, according to the real situation, in a flexible way, translated these senctences into active sentences, passive sentences, judgment sentences and sentences with no subject in Chinese. Practices have proved that these strategies or methods do help the author effectively solve the difficulties while doing E-C translation. In the end, the report suggests that translators should learn and grasp computer-assisted translation skills which can not only help to accelerate translating speed but also contribute to improving the quality of translation and which are also the practical requirement of the development of translation industry.
