Through the ages, line is one of the important painting techniques of expression, especially for Chinese traditional painting. Without line drawings the past painting creation can’t be completed, nowadays the designer still turn to the description of line when making art. And with the development of society, the continued creation and inspiration of artist have been changing constantly, therefore both distinction and connection exist between the past and present painting line while being synchronous with the times. The studying of past line will help to interpret visual language of the present line. This paper mainly interprets the line used in commercial illustration and the whole thesis is divided into five sections. First, the research significance of this article is determined based on analysing the background of line in illustration; and second, after learning the historical development of line by means of theoretical analysis, we realize the important position of line in the past and its constant development and change resulting from indomitable vitality; in the third part we analyze and research the current characteristics of line which include its commercial phenomenon and electronic trend, the result indicated that there is a lot of breakthrough attempts for line, but the number of specific researchers is relatively small; the fourth section expounds the superiority of culture in combination with commercialization; and the last part is primarily about the author’s research findings and design experience, the line has enormously developed the art design creation space for designers.Based on the theoretical research findings and creation design experience of this study, we find that under the conditional support of modern new science and technology, line still can be combined with technology that will help to complete its business practices without losing its artistry.
