A Translation Project Report Of A Social History Of The English Countryside

With the development of Chinese translation studies and practices, studies and practices in Humanities and Social Sciences has played an important role and had a growing influence in this area. Is it a randomness or the appeal of the age to choose the subject of the translation in Humanities and Social Sciences? what kind of theory and principle should the translator adhere to in translation? How to secure the faithfulness in translating term of Humanities and Social Sciences? Under the guide of socio-semiotic approach, the present thesis aims to overview the questions concerned in translating Humanities and Social Sciences cased by the translation of A Social History of the English Countryside as well as solutions to these questions.From the prospective the socio-semiotic approach, translation is actually a process of semiotic which include the understanding and explaining of signs. It is a study of transition in designative meaning, linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning with the aim to help understanding the meanings in words, rhetoric and discourse. Based on the above theory, the translate report is thus designed to analysis the way in understanding and translating the designative meaning and pragmatic meaning of historical place names, cultural and social vocabulary, and the cohesive strategies and translation skills in translating the linguistic meaning of social and historical discourse.There are generally four parts in the translate report. The first chapter is an introduction of the translating task including the backgrounds, writing styles and language features of the original text and the theory used in the report. The second chapter is a description of the translation process including preparations, detailed translation process and the summaries after translating. The third chapter, which is the main part of the report, explores the designative meaning and translation skills in translating the historical place names, and pragmatic meaning and translation skills in dealing with material-related cultural words and historical system-related words, as well as the cohesive devices in the construction of historical discourse. The last chapter is a summary of the experience learned from the translating practice in terms of the attainment of the translator, the use of CAT, interdisciplinary and project management in translating tasks, as well as the problems existed in using CAT and cultivating professionalism.The translation practice is significant as follows:First, in terms of its choice of subject, A Social History of the English Countryside gives the reader a grand view of the social development model of English countryside, which is a good example for Chinese modernization and civilization. Second, in terms of the choice of theory, using social semiotics translation method to instruct the translation of A Social History of the English Countryside from the perspective of designative meaning, intralingual meaning and pragmatic meaning is a meaningful attempt in the translation of Humanities and Social Sciences. Last but not the least, in terms of translating skills, the report, to some extent, is also instructive for its comprehensive discussion in the translation of English place name, cultural and social terms and historical discourse. In short, the practice is a significant attempt in the translation of Humanities and Social Sciences.
