A Report On The Translation Of Beyond The Masks: Race, Gender And Subjectivity(chapter 2)

This is a translation report on Chapter 2 “Enslaving the Soul of the Other” of Beyond the Masks: Race, Gender and Subjectivity by Amina Mama. The whole monograph has been translated by a group of three, and the Chapter II translated covers 1,0232 words in total, conforming to the academic degree requirement.This chapter mainly explores the African subjectivity with a critical look, describing the contradictory European thoughts about the Africans as well as the African’s transforming process to self-subjectivity. The researcher explains the racial differences between African and European by all kinds of ways like the theory of infant precocity and psychological tests, which help readers understand the early ideas and conflicts between African and European as well as their evolvement and development. Therefore, this chapter serves as the threshold of the successive chapters. In the process of translation, I mainly took the functional equivalence theory as guide, using word-to-word and free translation, striving to render it in coherent readable Chinese and finally achieve the equivalent effects between the origin and translation. The whole process of translation, its guiding theory and methods, the difficulties encountered, problems solved and those which still remain have been reflected in this report in detail.This translation practice helps me improve my translation ability, and the text shows me what the academic writing is, which all will be very much beneficial to my future translation career.
