| The award-winning Runaway is the masterpiece of Alice Munro, a famous novelist from Canada. Runaway is the first work of Alice Munro introduced into China. Many critics have intensively studied it from many aspects such as identity, feminism and narrative technique, while there is not any thesis discussing it from the perspective of translation studies.Taking Alice Munro’s Runaway and its Chinese translation from the famous translator Mr. Li Wenjun as her texts for study, adopting the world famous linguist Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory as the theoretical framework, the author of this thesis discusses how Adaptation Theory can explain the phenomena of literary translation, especially that of fiction translation. The author contrasts and analyzes the similarities and differences in syntax and other aspects between the source text Runaway and its Chinese version, then illuminates the translation strategies and methods adopted by the translator in the course of translating from the following four aspects: contextual adaptability, structural adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes.The study shows that in order to meet the reading expectation of target readers, the translator has taken receptors’ response into his consideration. The whole process of his translation is in fact a process of constantly adapting to the target context and a process of constant mediation between the two languages and cultures involved. We can draw some implications from the present study: when translating literary works, translators are supposed to regard translation process as a choice-making activity. The translators should make not only those non-verbal contextual adaptations in accordance with different addressors, addressees, people’s psychological world and social world, but also those linguistic adaptations in terms of the language structure. Only in this way, can a translated work be easily accepted by the target readers. |
