With the rapid economic and social development in China and the increase of activities of with foreign countries, English as a global language, has long been the important ways and means to introduce foreign advanced technology, strengthen the communication between people, draw lessons from foreign advanced management ideas. Higher vocational education occupies an indispensable position in our country’s higher education system, with the aim of cultivate high-skilled talents to meet the needs and challenges of the fast progress of world science and technology. Public English, as an important basic course of the higher vocational education, should not only play its basic role of language, but also focus on professional purposes specialty-related skills and language applicability, especially the ability of using English to deal with the future work-related business.However, for a long time the public English teaching has been following the teaching patterns of general higher education, it doesn’t take into full account the needs of English skills and qualities of high-technicians in employment market, so as to fail to reach the aim of putting the students’ study into full practice. At last, it tends to be reducing its role in the course system of the higher vocational education. How to promote the reform of the public English teaching in senior vocational colleges, improve the quality of public English teaching and realize the objective of cultivating applied specialized talents with high qualities and high skills become an urgent problem.The paper takes students in Grade 2013 and 2012 of A Vocational College as the research objects. By using the methods of literature analysis, comparative analysis, historical research method, and questionnaire survey, the writer analysis present situation of public English teaching, respectively from students’ general conditions, teaching objectives, teaching contents, teaching implementation and teaching evaluation, and propose the problems, based on the talent fostering orientation of higher vocational education and teaching orientation of the public English teaching in senior vocational education. According to others’ perfect theories and my own experiences on public English teaching, the writer offered some corresponding countermeasures, such as setting correct teaching objectives, choosing reasonable teaching contents, building effective teaching patterns and establishing scientific evaluation systems, to adapt to the development of society and the needs of economic construction through further optimizing the public English teaching in senior vocational colleges, improving teaching quality and realizing the talent fostering orientation of higher vocational education.
