As China grows stronger, more and more foreigners are curious about China and want to know more about China. They start to learn Chinese language-"mandarin" and thus resulting to the mandarin fever, which indicates that Chinese soft power and international influence are strengthening. At the same time, the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL) also promotes vigorously the "Volunteer Chinese Teacher Program". I am honored to be a Volunteer Chinese Teacher in Thailand and teach in Betong Jongfa Foundation School in Yala, Thailand. Most of the residents in Betong city are ethnic Chinese. Betong Jongfa Foundation School has a long history of Chinese teaching and it is a renowned hundred-year-old Chinese school, with independent Chinese division and 25 Chinese teachers in total. As Chinese is a compulsory course, the school sets up Chinese language course for every class from kindergarten to senior high school and it has more than 1100 Chinese learners. However, through my long term practice of teaching, my visit to the classes of the other teachers in Betong Jongfa Foundation School, and a series interviews to the teachers and the students, I find that there is a phenomenon existed in the vocabulary teaching of elementary Chinese course—students generally think that vocabulary are difficult to learn; their interests and enthusiasm to the vocabulary are not high; some students are even not interested in Chinese. Therefore, I start to learn the reason that resulted to the phenomenon and bring forward solutions. This research takes the elementary-level Chinese learners as the object of the study.In the whole TCFL(teaching Chinese as a foreign language) system, vocabulary teaching takes a very important position. The problem that "vocabulary teaching is difficult" is disputable in the TCFL’s practice. In the vocabulary teaching in elementary-level Chinese course, how to carry out vocabulary teaching, what kinds of flexible and targeted strategy vocabulary teaching needs, how students meet teachers, how students learn, exercise and consolidate the vocabulary, are important tasks for TCFL teachers to study and discuss. The first chapter of this paper is introduction; the second chapter is the vocabulary teaching status of elementary Chinese course and the problems that existed in that; the third chapter is the solutions to the problems that existed in the elementary Chinese course; and the last chapter is case analyze of vocabulary teaching in the elementary Chinese course.
