| In order to evaluate the impact of the Cultural Olympiad Programme, West Midlands Cultural Observation and Arts Council England conducted a research and wrote the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands:An evaluation of the impact of the programme (2008-2012). This report shows an outline of the event and elaborates the research methods and results of impact of Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands. The translation of this report serves as good reference to our country’s cultural events and their impact evaluation.Enlighten by the theory of scenes-and-frames semantic which was applied into translation study firstly by Mary Snell Hornby, the author completed the translation of this English evaluation report and discusses translation strategies and skills of the evaluation report from aspects including words translation, sentence translation and style translation. According to Hornby’s explanation of scenes-and-frames semantic, the translator should find the suitable target language frames to express the scenes the source text describes, which means that the translator should get scenes by analyzing and comprehending words, sentences and style of the English evaluation report and take the features and style of Chinese report into consideration so as to find suitable Chinese language frame that can lead the target readers to the same scenes with that of source text. Analysis of words translation is focused on the way to translate nouns in report and how to translate words in a flexible way. As for passive sentences and long complicated sentences, the key is to translate it into suitable Chinese sentences rather than the same frame as it is in source text. Besides, in order to make the translation version conform to the Chinese report, some conventional expressions should be used and paragraphs and sentences be arranged in different order with they are in the source text. |
