A Translation Report On The Extracts From The Human Development: A Life-Span View(6th Edition)

Human’s exploration of psychological phenomenon can be traced back to two thousand years ago. Psychology, an independent science, did not separate itself from philosophy until the mid-nineteenth century. As a branch of developmental psychology, psychology on human development is of great significance for us to understand the whole process of human psychological development.This translation report analyses the application of communicative translation in the translation of Human Development in order to make TT acceptable and comprehensible to Chinese readers. The ST is an informative text and is characterized by frequent and formal use of psychological terminologies, psychological concepts, complicated and complex sentences, and passive sentences. We believe that the communicative translation can help to realize the informative function of the original text. According to communicative translation theory, word-for-word translation cannot be used in translating psychological writings. When in E-C translation, we should get rid of the English thinking, and attach great importance to the accurate conveys of the information in original text. To achieve this purpose, we applied several translation methods, such as amplification, omission, conversion, restructuring, positive and negative translation under the guidance of communicative theory.
