Popular science essays aim at imparting knowledge to public with concise and simple language which are full of educational significance. However, due to the obstacles of language and culture, advanced popular science essays in foreign countries do not deserve its position in translation field. Therefore, the author wants to introduce these excellent and interesting knowledge to target language readers by translating them, which can fire up their enthusiasm to the beautiful nature.This thesis is a reflective research report which is based on the English-Chinese translation of Paul Evans, the columnist of Country Diary series from The Guardian. The series produces from the keen observation on nature of Evans and carefully study on animals and plants with penetrating gaze, which is imbued with literature aesthetics and scientific value. The translation researcher chose sixteen essays with care from the column as the source text and translated them into the Chinese language. From which the author analyzed typical examples and made a reflective report on the basis of Eugene A. Nida’s functional equivalence theory.This thesis contains five chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces the background of the source text and makes an analysis of its significance. The second chapter provides a detailed analysis of the source text from two perspectives: genre and rhetorical features. The third chapter analyzes the process of translation and makes an overview about the translation practice. The fourth chapter expounds the useful translation approaches and strategies the author applied to dispose of the complicated sentences, rhetoric and characterization in the source text. The last chapter summarizes the whole thesis, discusses the limitation of translation practice and makes suggestions for future practice. The author hopes that this translation practice and reflective report can provide feasible advice to other practice of this type.
