| This report is based on the Chinese-English translation practice of Hi I’m China II(Preface and Section 1,2 of Chapter One).The book introduces the geography of China and the creative process of Chinese people from the scale of time and space,shows the beauty of Chinese geography,mountains and rivers,and tells the stories of China.The translation of this book is in line with the trend of contemporary China shifting from translating the world to translating China.The source text is a popular science text,which is scientific,popular,interesting and literary,and rich in the linguistic expressions of indirect denotation.Therefore,it is worthy of in-depth study on how to reproduce the charm of literary language in the English translation of a popular science text.Based on the characteristics of literary language,this report focuses on the two major types of translation difficulties in the reproduction of the indirect denotation of literary language,namely,the reproduction of rhetorical effect and the reproduction of indirect referential meaning.The rhetoric is reflected in the simile,metaphor and metonymy in the source text;the indirect referential meaning will be discussed in relation to the linguistic and cultural contexts of the source text.Under the guidance of dynamics of adaptability,the translator adopts two translation strategies,namely domestication and foreignization,with an aim to realize the translation reproduction of indirect denotation.Through the translation practice,the translator has gained a better understanding of the textual characteristics of popular science texts and the translation strategies of indirect denotation.The author has generalized the relevent translation strategies and methods based on the translation practice,hoping to provide some reference for the English translation of similar texts in the future. |
