When it comes to the Chinese piano work performance and development, it has always been regarded as a prominent study subject of Chinese piano world. Throughout the development of Chinese piano, although it only has a hundred years of history, surprisingly, Chinese piano development has made remarkable achievements and came into contact with the world. With the training and leading of older generation of artists, there are numbers of outstanding young Chinese pianists such as Lang Lang, Li Yundi,have earned broad attention and worldwide recognition. They become a symbol of Chinese piano development level to play on the global stage. In addition,many of Chinese-style piano works have sprung up in the past decade. Some of them are well known to most of us, such as Buffalo Boy’s Flute, The Yellow River Piano Concerto. There are also some well-adapted works which called Flute and Drum Melody of the Setting sun and Hundreds Birds Worshipping the Phoenix. Some of opuses such as Huang Huwei’s The Jialing River Fantasia, Chen Yi’s Duo Ye for Chamber Orchestra,Zhou Long’s Wu Kui,Zhao Xiaosheng’s Tai Ji combine Chinese elements with modern techniques. These piano works that are widely played by world’s pianists represent the bright future of Chinese piano works with fresh vitality and diversity of development.As one of the most important form of the piano performances, two-piano performance, which formed in Europe, has been fully developed since the 16 th century. Even though the time of double piano performance spread in China later than Europe, once it just sprang up in China, it had been widely welcomed and promoted by pianists and students. Nowadays, you can see the performances of two pianos in some Chinese major piano competitions and some concerts. However, the choice of repertoire is still mostly works abroad, except for some special games or the specified requirements, there is little piano player will choose the Chinese-style double pianos music to perform. The main reason is the creation of two-piano works has not yet widespread concerned Chinese composers, the number of works can be selected are very limited. As for the existing Chinese-style two-piano works, because of the lack of references and audio information and other factors that are still in the exploration and development stage, this form still has not been widely used and promoted. The Emperor Discards His Armor is a very characteristic Chinese-style two-piano work, this piece of work adapts from Chinese ancient classical music, which has same limitations of references, but the composer uses the original ancient music that we are familiar with a prototype, takes the traditional Chinese folk music as a creative object that combine with double-piano performance to inherit Chinese traditional music. Further more, mixture of eastern and western musical elements of this opus raises a lot of fun.By analyzing The Emperor Discards His Armor musical characteristics and potential problems during the cooperation, appeals more and more performers who could get chance to know more about this opus. In the mean time, author also appeal that we could pay more attention to this kind of Chinese-style double-piano work and be encouraged to create more in the future. Hopefully, we could use the technique we learned in practical way and play a positive role in promoting two-piano’s future development.
