A Study Of Piano Divertimento "Excursions" By Samuel Barber

Composer Samuel Barber(1910-1981)hailed as an outstanding representative of the “new romantic” music. This essay is intended to investigate and study Samuel Barber ’s piano divertimento “Excursions ”(OP.20). Through the existing domestic and foreign literature and summarizes the author’s own learning experience, this article is supposed to be divided into four chapters. The first one is studying the literature by documentary method: proceeding from the literature and information of domestic and foreign be reasonable collection, carding generalization, analyzed and summarized, in order to avoid repetitive research,to get higher starting point and further study. Second,to study playing with annotation method: by analyzing the style characteristics of “Excursion ”,so that we can better understand this piano suite. To combine the reflection from playing this piano divertimento, this essay notes and comments the difficulties, then proposes solutions. After that, it compares different musical interpretation methods and propose selection advices. Last, theoretical thinking with music aesthetics : to analyze the aesthetic of Samuel Barber ’s piano divertimento “Excursions ”with combining the ideas and principles of musical aesthetic characteristics and beauty-appreciation characteristics.
