Since the opening up of China, the interaction between China and foreign countries is becoming more and more frequent, making Chinese tourism achieve a rapid development. An increasing emphasis is put on the publicity of tourist resources, and a growing attention is paid to the composition and translation of tourist publicity texts. Meanwhile, adaptation, as one of crucial translation methods, is increasingly applied to C-E translation of tourist publicity texts.The writing styles of Chinese and English tourist publicity texts differ from each other. Chinese tourist texts lay particular stress on the delicate language to attract readers, while English tourist texts on the accurate contents. The source texts in this thesis mainly depict the beautiful scenery of the Southern Great Mountain, with loads of records in ancient books, lots of poems written by famous poets, and many vivid and beautiful expressions, which are the features of these tourist texts. When translators translate these Chinese tourist publicity texts into English texts, they must rearrange and recompile these contents, follow information-oriented and relevance principles, and adopt the methods of amplification, abridgement, rewriting and rearrangement, so as to make sure the readability of the target texts, and improve the level of reader’s reception.This thesis analyzes the tourist publicity texts of the Southern Great Mountain from the perspectives of cultural differences and reader’s reception. It first studies the features of tourist texts of the Southern Great Mountain and the main ideas of adaptation, then concludes major principles of adaptation as well as the main methods of adaptation in accordance with these principles, so as to provide some ideas of C-E translation for tourist texts. Thus, the thesis holds that adaptation is very necessary for the C-E translation of Chinese tourist publicity texts.
