A Report On The Translation Of Egmont

This translation report is based on the author’s translation of Miss Anna Swanwick’s English version Egmont, a drama originally written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.The drama narrates a historic story in a period of the mid-16 thcentury in Netherlands,when Count Egmont led a revolutionary movement and was killed during a palace politics struggle. The author has accomplished the translation project, which contains five acts totally. The project aims to introduce the excellent reading matter of western Europe into China and provide a platform for Chinese readers’ learning about the literary masterpiece under the historic background of that era.The author has conducted some practice and exploration in the tragedy Egmont under Nida’s functional equivalence theory and tried to solve problems during the process of translation with translation skills such as voice transformation, sentence order adjustment, amplification and omission methods, etc. The translation report is divided into four parts: The first part is the project introduction; the second part describes the processes of translation work; the third part analyzes dialogue examples with translation theories and skills; the fourth part summarizes experience and lessons.The author has learned from the practice that it is of great importance on the understanding of English text in English-Chinese translation and that the author should improve Chinese literary ability to get a higher translation level.
