| Reflecting on family, love and friendship, the personal relationship and culture of U.S.and Chinese were exactly different because of the discrepancy in behavior, thinking andvalue. As foreign Chinese education spreading in US, more and more Chinese learners aredemanded to endure and adapt to the differences of the two cultures, which makesmovies-one of most influenced culture carrier-play more important role. The Joy LuckClub, an adaptation of Famous ethnic Chinese author Tan Enmei’s work, deeplyuncovered the conflict and fusion between Chinese and American culture. By describingfour couples of mother and daughter, the movie focuses on the trait of Chinese familyemotion, the value of Chinese women on marriage and the lively and harmonious view onfriendship. Oppositely, American culture advocates independent, direct and frank traits.The two features were showed contradistinctively in the movie, which made it a great caseto study cross-culture communication and to directly apply to foreign Chinese education.The comparison and analysis of difference and fusion of Chinese and American culture inpersonal relationship are able to help American Chinese learner understand eastern cultureand make it easier to communicate between the two culture, and thus eliminate someobstacle in foreign Chinese education.The first section of this paper exemplified the daily life of American students inHuazhong University of Science and Technology to generalize the cross-culturecommunication problem to American Chinese learners. The second section reveals thediscrepancy between Chinese and American on personal relationships by showing theconflict between ethnic Chinese mother and daughter, ethnic Chinese and American andtraditional Chinese group in The Joy Luck Club. The third section introduces the fusiontrend of Chinese and American Culture. The forth section provides suggestion forAmerican students’ Chinese learning, which aims to help American-background learnersto understand Chinese culture and to improve their Chinese level. |
