Since the 1990 s, American independent film is booming. In this period, American independent outfits are increasing their film output, and win many important awards in various International Film Festival. Then, the marginal status of the independent film is changed. The important bearers of independent film include Steven Soderbergh,Quentin Tarantino, Whit Stillman and so on. But the most different one is Richard Linklater. Richard Linklater has 15 masterpieces. Compared with other independent film directors, the theme of Richard Linklater’s works is various, and the view is unique.In the International Film Festival Richard Linklater got a lot of top prizes. Especially the application of CG animation technology in his film is the first time and requires constant attention. This paper aims to analysis and research Richard Linklater’s major representative works. So we can understand and master comprehensively the style and features of his works. And we can learn a lot in the later cinematic creation.This paper has 5 parts. The first part mainly states the general situation of his films and the equality and difference between Richard Linklater and other directors. The second part summarizes the narrative features, especially the multiple narrative. Besides the narrative style of the mix of feature film and documentaries should be paied close attention too. The third part investigates the uniqueness of his lens language, special a full-length shots and endless stage lines, which makes us think about it repeatedly.Appropriate background music and CG animation technology makes his films very interesting. In the fourth part, we should master the integral feature of his works, learn to master the understanding of time, and the expression of documentary. The fifth part summarizes the creative inspiration from Richard Linklater’s major works.
