Explicitation In C-E Consecutive Interpreting

Explicitation is one of the most thoroughly discussed issues in translation studies. Introduced by Vinay and Darbelnet in 1958, the term explicitation involves making explicit in the target language what remains implicit in the source language.Various scholars have put forward explicitation as one of the many translation universals.This thesis sets out to examine explicitation in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. The analysis is based on three press conference attended by China’s three foreign ministers. Data collected will be used to identify three research questions. The present study focuses on deliberate explicitation generated by three professional interpreters.Research questions consist:1. What are the characteristics of explicitation in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting?2. How are connectives used to state logic links in TT?3. What might be the reasons for the features of explicitation in C-E consecutive interpreting?After examining the Chinese ST and its correspondent English TT, the author believes that output rendered by professional interpreters is not always longer than the original one, however, there is a prominent number of tokens which verify the phenomenon of explicitation. In other words, explicitation does not necessarily bring redundancy in C-E consecutive interpreting. The author then used Interpretive Theory and Gile’s Effort Model to explore the possible reasons of explicitation.
