This thesis is the study on the application of multimedia in the vocabulary teaching in secondary vocational school.Vocabulary is an important part of language, and plays a key role in the whole process of language teaching. When we read, we can’t move on fluently without a certain range of vocabulary. D.A.Wilkins(1972) said that “Without grammar very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” Vocabulary is the fundamental component of a language and meanwhile plays an important role in language learning. Therefore how to effectively conduct in vocabulary teaching and help the students master more vocabulary is particularly important.At present, although the research on multimedia vocabulary teaching is a lot, there are also many scholars spending time to explore the role of multimedia in vocabulary teaching, most are limited to higher or elementary education, as for secondary vocational school, the research on this field is relatively few. The aim of this thesis is trying to do research on the role of multimedia to the vocabulary teaching in the secondary vocational school through theory and experiment, in order to produce beneficial enlightenment on students’ vocabulary leaning.The specific research pattern is using experimental teaching method to compare the different results. Choose 2 classes to assist in performing the teaching experiment. One class continues to adapt the traditional teaching method while the other is the multimedia assisted teaching. In practice, all kinds of multimedia forms can use such as sound, picture and text to do vocabulary teaching and adopt different interpreting method according to different characteristics of words. 5 categories will divide into the vocabulary(synonymy; antonym; homophony; homomorphism; conjugate). The thorough strategies carried out in the experiment are as follows: using picture-showing to differ some synonymies; using movie clip to learn some antonym; using flash cartoon to create the mini-situation of homomorphism; using audio equipment to learn homophony; using specific characters and design crossword to help students memorize the conjugates. As for the test of conclusion, another test was held after the experiment. After comparing and analyzing the test results, we can easily draw a conclusion that the multimedia assisted teaching in English vocabulary teaching proves to be more valuable than the traditional teaching method. In order to gain full scale conclusion, questionnaires on the multimedia assisted teaching to teachers and students are both made, which further proves the acceptance and advantages of the multimedia assisted teaching approach.This thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction part, and it simply introduces the definition, origin, development of the multimedia teaching and its advantages to traditional teaching. Chapter 2 is the literature review; it introduces the combination of the vocabulary and multimedia teaching for English as well as constructivism learning theory. Chapter 3 is mainly introducing the characteristics of the secondary vocational English vocabulary and the design of multimedia teaching, then research on the problems existed in such school students’ learning. Chapter 4 is the specific implementation steps for the multimedia vocabulary teaching experiment. Chapters 5 are discussed and analyze the experiment results. At the end, Chapter 6 is the conclusion, it mainly summaries the research achievement, problems and prospects for the future. At the meanwhile, I put forward some suggestions from the perspective of teachers and students to help and improving vocabulary teaching efficiency in secondary vocational school.
