Nowadays school education has developed unprecedentedly, while students’ misbehaviors have become more and more serious. Facing such a stressful situation, moral education, actually as the primary task of school education, has become inefficient. In order to improve the effect of moral education in college, not only should we learn some successful experience of moral education from other countries, but also we have to explore the specific ways to merge moral education with school subjects.Language instruction has some special impacts on students’ physical and mental development. So merging moral education with college English instruction can effectively improve the inefficiency of moral education. In addition, the syllabus of college English instruction has clearly pointed out the importance of merging moral education with English teaching and learning. On that basis, with the guidance of some related successful experience from Singapore, the function of college English instruction in our country can be changed fundamentally. On one hand, students’ basic English knowledge and skills can be better enhanced and acquired. On the other hand, some appropriate values can be formed to help students know how to learn by themselves, how to survive in such a competitive society, and also how to behave themselves to be a good man.The specific meaning of merging moral education with college English instruction is based on the combination of moral contents and English subjects. From this process, English teachers are encouraged to use different ways to dig some hidden value and moral materials and to combine moral education with English instruction effectively and smoothly. This comparative research is conducted by the combination of quantitative and qualitative research, using comparison method, questionnaire method, interviewing method, and documentary method to find out the similarities and differences on merging moral education with college English instruction between China and Singapore, especially the similarities and differences reflecting from the teaching principles and aims, teaching process, teaching contents and the effect of merging moral education with college English instruction. From which some problems on merging moral education with college English instruction in our country have appeared, such as the dimness of teaching principles and aims of moral education, the limited ways of evaluation and moral education, the old and inefficient methods of moral education, and the outdated moral contents. Then from some related successful experience of Singapore, some strategies which can improve the effectiveness of merging moral education with college English instruction in our country will be proposed, such as clarifying the teaching principles and aims, and providing the overall planning of merging moral education with college English instruction; intensifying the consciousness of merging moral education with college English instruction and changing the ways of evaluation; providing more ways for merging moral education with college English instruction, and exploring more moral materials for English teaching; improving the methods of merging moral education with college English instruction, and transforming students’ learning styles; updating the contents of merging moral education with college English instruction and investing more; maintaining the effects of merging moral education with college English instruction and intensifying the affective interaction between students and teachers. |
