On Hills Miller’s Literary Criticism Theory

Literary criticism is not only an important part of Hillis Miller’s literary theory, but also a practical exercise field of his literary theory. In sixty years of critical career, he formed his own unique criticism. This paper try to expound his Literary Criticism from the three aspects.First of all, the formation of Miller’s criticism of literature is closely related to his unique understanding of language and text: in his opinion, literature is the "worldly magic", readers and critics are called into the text; literary language is performative, not only has the constative function, also has the performative function.This feature leads the readers and critics into the surreal world, also reconstruction of the real world; Literature is heterogeneous and rhetorical language, so it is difficult to critics to make a unified and final explanation for text. Secondly, in the different periods of the theory of literary criticism, Miller showed different understandings: Affected by the New Criticism, Close Reading becomes the basis of his literary criticism; In the period of Consciousness Criticism and Deconstructive criticism, the pursuit of the inherent heterogeneity of works, become a prominent feature of the two different stages of criticism; In the period of speech-act theory, he takes revealing the truth of the text as objective. Finally, Miller put forward different levels of requirements for literature recipients: First of all, no matter what age what context, the reader should be insisted on to read the original language; Second, the receiver should repeat repeatition link in the text, build up the meaning of the text structure, so that the text meaning constantly proliferation; Finally, the subject should break traditional literature criticism for the authors intention of ideas, for the purpose of based on text, create rich meaning. Therefore, the positive significance of literary criticism view of Hills Miller is for more free space for the readers to make the interpretation, his literary criticism has become a rich initiative and creative practice.
