| J. Hillis. Miller is a famous contemporary literary American critic, who is one of the main representatives of the Yale school. He changed his direction to Deconstruction under the influence of Derrida's theory in the 60s, and emphasized over the indetermination of language meaning in text to come to subvert "the logocentrism" tradition. He attached great importance to Operative practice of deconstructive criticism, and summed up many basic methods of Deconstruction through decomposed reading and comments on a great deal of literature works, one of which is the viewpoint of repetition, which provides a feasible method for reading and analyzing the text.Miller analyzed and explained the unique viewpoint of repetition in a concrete way mainly in his book entitled Fiction and Repetition: Seven English Novels. Because this book has not translated in Chinese, the number of studied papers for miller's viewpoint of repetition is still relatively small in our country. Reviewing these studies, one can see that it is lacking in depth and is just simple arrangement and summary. The author intends to make a systematic and profound investigation into Miller's viewpoint of repetition and try to put across the peculiarity and values, combining Chinese present condition of literary criticism to point out the enlightened meaning. This thesis consists of seven parts, including introduction. The introduction that based on introducing simply Miller'academic experience expounded the selection of this subject on the cases, the innovative value and the overall study of this ideas, which aims at the general summary of the issues and definitude. In the first chapter, the connotation of this viewpoint of repetition is clarified. Miller took seven English classical novels as the model and divided all sorts of repetitive phenomena into three kinds of situations on the scale. Moreover, he summed up into two forms for those, namely"Platonic"repetition and Nietzschean mode of repetition, or willed memory and involuntary form of memory, so he pointed out that the rich meaning of literary works precisely from the combination of various repetitive phenomena. In the second chapter, the application and the function of"repeat"are displayed. Miller displayed a specific interpretation of "repeat" on the use and function in the analysis and the explanation of the seven novels. First, a large number of repetitions can create super rich meanings, so become subversion of the organic form in the text; Secondly, repetitions prevent readers from making a single clear explanation to the text, and in a certain sense, these also prevented the figures from death and make the story continuation so eternal. In addition, repetitions is deconstructing the text while also a mean to build text, and this accord with Miller's purpose of critic for either deconstruct or building the text.In the third chapter, the paper makes a systematic analysis and grasp about the theoretical sources and background of viewpoint of repetition. Miller's viewpoint of repetition has diverse theoretical sources. He was deeply influenced by ideological and cultural traditions of Western repetition, and also gained the profound enlightenment from Derrida and Paul de Man's ideology in deconstructive trend of thought. Besides, he also integrated and drew lessons from intertextuality theory in post-structuralism. Meanwhile, the rise of Miller's viewpoint of repetition is also closely linked with the social and cultural background at that moment. In the fourth chapter, the uniqueness of viewpoint of repetition is indicated.Miller put forward his theory which is based on the deconstruction of the concept is essentially a strategy or approach for deconstructive criticism, and its unique heterogeneous symbiotic nature were reflected in the starting point, function and purpose of the three fields, that is to say, from deconstructive strategy and practice the deconstructive intertextuality theory, which aims at highlighting the real intention of deconstruction. In the fifth chapter, the paper sums up the value and limitations of the viewpoint of repetition. Miller's viewpoint of repetition respected deconstructive reading, and revealed heterogeneous symbiotic nature of the text and the meanings, thus deconstructing the concept of dual oppose in literary criticism, which further perfected the theoretical shape of deconstructive criticism. The viewpoint of repetition offers a strong defense for today's post-modern literary, and meanwhile it has the positive meaning to the current Chinese literature criticism. Finally the paper points out the existence of limitations of Miller's viewpoint of repetition, and gives its objective assessment and awareness, draws essence, abandons its theoretical shortcomings, so that we can understand it more comprehensively and profoundly. In conclusion, the paper makes a comprehensive summary of the value and significance of Miller's viewpoint of repetition and the contribution and impact of his deconstructive criticism. |
