A Research On The Medical Social Work In The Period Of The Republic Of China

At present, the tension of doctor-patient relationship, medical disputes and medical accidents have become serious problems. Hospitals should think and try to solve the problems from multiple perspectives, such as improving medical levels, paying attention to the humanistic care, and strengthening the functional construction. And one of the perspectives is to strengthen the construction of medical social work. In China, the theoretical system and methods of medical social work are both from abroad, lacking local experiences with lots of problems in their development. The Social Service Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital(PUMCH), as the first professional medical social work institution in China, not only has been highly recognized by society in working methods, and has also made great achievements in the training of professional talents and promoting the domestic medical social work construction. The research on the Social Service Department of PUMCH can enrich the history of China’s medical social work. It can also provide referential experiences for the development of theoretical system of medical social work in China and references of localization case for the development of China’s practice of medical social work.This research mainly adopts the literature method, through collecting and collating medical social work documentation and paper writings during the period of the Republic of China, especially the case records and the related documents of the Social Service Department of PUMCH, analyzes and summarizes the typical characteristics of medical social work of PUMCH during the period of the Republic of China, including value concept, operation mode, working method, the service mechanism of resource integration and service evaluation and feedback, etc. The first part of the thesis introduces the research background, status, ideas and methods of research. The second part of the thesis gives a general introduction on the domestic and international development situation of medical social work during the republican period. China’s medical social work was propelled by the development of international social work and the medical and social services development of Christian in china. The third part focuses on the establishment and operation in the Social Service Department of PUMCH, a general introduction on value concept, institutional settings, object selection, working process and regulations. The fourth part elaborates the professional techniques used by the Social Service Department of PUMCH, including economic aid for clients, process of case work, and community social work. The fifth part is the summary of the development of the Social Service Department in PUMCH, which may be used as references for the development of medical social work in China.
