A Report On Intercultural Communication In Contexts(Chapter 10)

Intercultural Communication in Contexts by Judith N. Martin and Thomas K. Nakayama sheds new light into researches in cross-culture communication. This report is based on the Chinese translation of the tenth chapter: Culture, Communication, And Conflict, in which the author discusses intercultural conflicts from a dialectical perspective, focuses on intercultural conflicts brought about by globalization and uneven economic development, elaborates on the perspectives of opportunity and destruction in handling conflicts, and puts forward the cross-cultural management strategies of conflicts between the east and the west. This chapter is full of cases and rendered in an easily acceptable way.This chapter falls into the category of the informative text in line with the text type analysis of Peter Newmark. As a result, Skopos theory is adopted to guide my translating practice. This communicative translation strategy aided by the semantic translation analyzes the chosen text at lexical, syntactic and textual levels. Various translation methods, word addition, conversion, linear translation, inverse translation and so on, are used to produce not only readily acceptable but also accurate and professional products in the hope that this translation will be helpful for cross-cultural researches.
