| If we refer to the advanced western teaching theory and Chinese history resources, English teaching in China will become more mature at present. Therefore, the paper uses the second language acquisition theory to do research on and discuss the English teaching of Fukien Christian University and HwaNan Women’s College.Involving knowledge of linguistics, history and pedagogy, this paper uses methods of historical research, comparative study and case study to analyze the English teaching of Fukien University and HwaNan Women’s College.Students majoring in English in Fukien Christian University took all courses in English and used western textbooks during their study. The most extraordinary feature of the teaching in this university is that they combined English teaching with philosophical studies. This kind of teaching model treated English as a tool and exposed their students to sufficient English acquisition environment. HwaNan Women’s College paid attention to the cultivation of the literacy. Therefore, the students have to read abundant western literary works, especially classical works including poetry. The sufficient language input gave students enough knowledge concerning western social systems, social customs, and ideology and so on. Both Christian University and Hwa Nan Women’s College were run by the Christian Church, and they provided excellent teachers and organized a large number of student activities in English, which created favorable conditions for English acquisition.Naturally the English education in this two universities sheds some light on today’s English education in China, but it is worth mentioning that because of the elite education model in the republic of China, Fukien Christian University and HwaNan Women’s College made amazing achievement in English teaching but the education at the present China is sort of mass education and this difference set limitations to what we can learn in English education from the two Christian universities. |
