As China is going global, interpretation, as a bridge for communication, is playing an important role in the intercommunication. Therefore, it attracts the attention of a lot of specialists, scholars and even lovers of interpretation in the society to the study of all kinds of interpretations and their strategies. In particular, press conference interpretation (PCI) appeals even more to scholars and lovers of interpretation, for it is full of challenges and has a higher requirement for interpreters in terms of time and flexibility.In press conference interpretation, interpreters will inevitably come across the interpretation of Chinese four-character phrases. Chinese four-character phrases have been frequently applied to the speeches made by leaders in the official conferences because they have the characteristics of being simple in meaning, vivid in context, rich in connotation and strong in rhythm and reproduction. However, it’s just because of the characteristics of four-character phrases that have made it undoubtedly an extremely great challenge for interpreters to interpret them on the spot and accurately on such nervous occasions. Therefore, there is an urgent need for us to explore the strategies for interpreting Chinese four-character phrases in conference interpretation.The author of this thesis will explore the interpretation of Chinese four-character phrases under the guidance of Skopostheorie on the basis of corpus from the PCI of 2013-2014 and in combination with the introductions of Chinese four-character phrases. She will creatively explore the influence of the purpose for interpretation, its receivers and its promptness on the interpretation of Chinese four-character phrases. Then she will sum up four major strategies for interpretation:literal translation, set of translation, free translation and omission by means of statistics, contrastive analyses and elaboration with examples.This thesis tries to make a study of the Skopostheorie in combination with the practice of interpreting Chinese four-character phrases in conferences, which is a new development of research on the interpretation of Chinese four-character phrases. An exploration of the influence of the purpose for interpretation, its receivers and its promptness on the interpretation of Chinese four-character phrases is conducive to the improvement of the quality of interpreting Chinese four-character phrases.It is hoped that this study can offer some constructive references for the study of interpreting Chinese four-character phrases in conference interpretation. |
