| Aerospace engineering has been ranked as one of the science and technology area which grows rapidly and influences enormously in the recognition and remake of nature in the previous century. Although Chinese aerospace has achieved plenty of accomplishments since1956, they are still in great need of learning from their western counterparts, especially America. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to translate the English aerospace materials into Chinese.A number of scholars have researched translation shift, among which Catford’s "translation shift" has strong influence. In some books written by Chinese scholars on Western translation theories, the translation shift part is often take Catford’s "translation shift" as an example. In1965, in his book, A Linguistic Theory of Translation, the British linguist Catford first proposed the theory of "translation shift", namely departures from formal correspondence in the process of going from SL to TL, which was grounded on semantic equivalence rather than form equivalence and which accords with the principle of "content is more important than form" in aerospace English translation. This paper analyses the features of aerospace English and the application of Catfold’s shifts theory from the aspects of level shifts, structure-shifts, class-shifts, unit-shifts and intra-shifts in the translation practice of part of Operator/Manufacturer Scheduled Maintenance Volume2-Rotorcraft. |
