With the rapid growth of market economy in China, significant changes have taken placein all aspects of economy. The government procurement field also changed dramatically, withthe procurement contract becoming more complete. This report is produced on the basis of theauthor’s practical translation experience of Contract for Pipe Material Procurement&Bidding of Chengdu New-built Infrastructure Maintenance Base Project,and the author hopes,by translating the procurement contract, to get a further understanding to the language featureof the commercial contract in both English and Chinese, and explore a translation method ofthe adverbial modifier in the contract.This article intends to emphasize using adverbial skillfully to solve the problem ofrelevant contract translation, which, because of its legality, especially needs to achieve"functional equivalence". In the contract, there are often requirements to define and rule bothparties about the time, place, condition and methods of the trade. While in English, adverbialclause can be expressed about such statements. Therefore, embarking from the translation ofadverbial contract text, this article analyzes and discusses the translation of contracts. In termsof lexicology, the paper focused on the role of adverb as a adverbial modifier in a sentence, inwhich the position of adverb semantically matters a lot when it serves as temporal adverbialor manner adverbial, thus a full comprehension of the text seems very important duringcontract translation; it is clear that adverbial phrase is a simplified expression of adverbialclause, so adverbial phrase is often used for the purpose of short sentence, clear gist andstructure as well as complete description; besides the adverbial phrase, the paper alsodiscussed how adverbial clause works in a sentence during contract translation. Based on theprinciple of “Hypotaxis English and Parataxis Chinese”, word order shall be adjusted andre-integrated when adverbial clause is used to cater to authentic real English.
