A C-E Practice Report Of The Plant Procurement Contract On Project Of Power Generating By Incinerating Solid Waste

With the global integrity’s acceleration,international communications are becoming frequent and the business contract plays a key role in business activities.The contract not only explicitly stipulates the rights and obligations of contracting parties,but also works as an important legal evidence for safeguarding personal interests.The demand for business contracts is increasing by years,but its translation quality still has much room for improvement.The accurate translation of contracts is a basic factor for successful cooperation between two parties,at the same time,it can effectively avoid economic frictions.The Plant Procurement Contract on Project of Power Generating by Incinerating Solid Waste(hereinafter referred to as “Equipment Purchase Contract”)is selected as the source text in this report and the translator makes a further research for C-E translation process of business contracts by analyzing its stylistic characteristics and difficulties encountered in the translation.The Equipment Purchase Contract is a legal text featured by formality and preciseness with legal effect.At the lexical level,there are lots of formal words,terminology and verb phrases in the text.At the syntactic level,there are lots of long sentences with quite complicated structures.Meanwhile,the notional passives are more frequently used than syntactic passives in the source text.At the textual level,this contract has the complete content and clear structure.This report discusses the translation difficulties of Equipment Purchase Contract from level shift and category shift under the guidance of Catford’s Translation shift.The report consists of five parts.The first part gives an introduction to the background,source and significance of this report.The second part makes a description for the translation task,including the analysis of source text and requirements from the entrusting party.The third part reviews the whole translation process: the pre-translation work covers the collection of background information,the choice of parallel texts and guiding theory as well as the formulation of translation plan and glossary of terms;in the course of translation,thetranslator controls quality from vocabulary,sentence patterns and text style;the post-translation work covers a series of evaluations and feedback on this translation,including self-evaluation,peer evaluations and evaluation from the entrusting party.The fourth part is the case analysis,the translator analyzes translation difficulties from levels of lexis,sentence and grammar,and makes concrete analysis with examples guided by Translation shift.The last part sums up some reflections and inspirations on this translation practice and makes the implication for the future work.
