Perceptual fluency, which is known as a subjective experience ofdifficulty has profound practical and theoretical significance. Also, most of the existing researches used the same paradigm to testeffects about perceptual fluency. In general, features of the words aremanipulated to test how perceptual fluency influences one’s memory.Or researchers manipulated the features of picture to find out the linkbetween perceptual fluency and liking. Thanks to these studies, wecounld know more about how perceptual influence our cognition andemotion. But what we can’t ignore is that during our day life, wereceive information normally form coherent texts not form singlewords or images. More important is the research to date hadn’t reacha agreement about perceptual fluency’s influence. There for we dohave a need to further study how perceptual fluency affect ourcognition and emotion with new materials and methods basedChinese cultural. We conducted two experiments. In experiment one, we used theimage as experimental material, manipulated the image’s symmetryto cause the different fluency to investigate the effects of perceptualfluency on cognition and emotion. In experiment two, participantsread inverted and upright texts and finished a recognition task andmake a judge on their emotion. The experimental results show that, with image as experimentalmaterial, perceptual fluency has significant effect on individualemotion. The same stimulus is evaluated more positively when it canbe processed with high rather than low fluency but no significanteffect on individual’s memory; with text as experimental material, perceptual fluency has significant effect on both individual’scognition and emotion. High perceptual fluency can trigger individualpositive emotion, at the same time, low perceptual fluency materialcan promote individual cognition, which performs better memoryeffect and the more elaborate way of information processing.
