E-C Translation Of Parts Of Sirit And Music And Its Critical Commentary

This translation project is divided into two parts, namely the translation part and its critical commentary. The original text is chosen from Chapter8to part of Chapter11of Spirit and Music, written by H. Ernest Hunt, who was an English writer and psychology tutor. In this book, the author, from his unique perspective, has studied the significance of music in life and mind. This book belongs to social science reading and possesses academic characteristics.In the critical commentary, the application of translation strategies is analyzed. The translator combined literal translation and free translation flexibly according to different translation circumstances. Literal translation is used when it comes to some terms, rhetorical words and the sentences whose structures are the same in source language and target language, while free translation is applied when the original words or sentences in source text cannot be translated and presented in target language directly. In addition, the report summarizes some experiences in the process of translation in hope of making reference for the future translation study of this kind of text.The critical commentary includes three parts. The first part introduces the translating project generally. This part also gives a brief synopsis of the original text, and its characteristics are analyzed. The second part introduces the translation process and summarizes difficulties that the translator has faced during the translation process. This part also tells how the translator has solved these problems with proper translation approaches, mainly literal translation and free translation. The conclusion sums up the experience gained in this translation.
