Born in Qian Long Year, Qing Dynasty, Xu kun was a Shan Xilegendary writer. Although he wrote only three masterpieces in hislife and only two of them are now in the world, the left two works haveimportant influence on the following dramas. But it’s necessary tostudy his works.This paper is focusing on study Xu Kun’s two masterpieces: YuHua Tai and Bi Tian Xia, analyzing their ideological content andartistic characteristics. The paper can be divided into three parts:the first part studies Xu Kun’s friendship, official career, works, etc;the second part analyzes Yu Hua Tai’s basic information, ideologicalcontent and artistic characteristics; the third part analyzes Bi TianXia’s basic information, plot development, ideological content andartistic characteristics.On ideological content, these two works both reflect the writer’szeal for official career, his good wish toward love and his praise fornormal labors. On artistic characteristics, Xu Kun arranged very complicatedand reasonable plots with doublet structure. He created vivid andlovely personalities to strengthen the theme. His language wasprofessional but humorous, making the characters very real.In general, Xu Kun’s works were at a declining period of KunDrama, and his idea was not open, hence his works lacked thecreativity and fresh idea. His works didn’t achieve a high standardand had little developing influence on the following dramas, butenriched and contributed to Shan Xi Drama.
