Reading is a process that obtain information and gain information from writtenmaterial and affect reader form many aspects.Reading is very important in theinformatization society.Reading ability is hot topic focused in psychologyfield.Character and typography are important for reading.The Research of characterand typography has a long history,As macular disease is increasingly becoming aglobal problem,the study of reading performance in individuals with macular diseasehas more practical significance.In order to study the reading of macular disease patients,We have designed twoexperiments.In the first experiment,a3×2completely within-subject experiment isdesigned in order to investigate the effects of font size and font type on chinesereading.Then,we designed a3×3completely within-subject experiment to investigatethe effects of text space of chinese text and the combined effects of line space andword space on the ability of individuals with macular degeneration to read shortpassages of text.The experimental materials come from National civil service examand the HSK.The results of the first experiment showed that:(1)Impact of font size on readingperformance is significantly different.(2)Impact of font type on reading performance issignificantly different,too.(3)The interaction between font size and font type issignificantly different.Font size significantly influenced the reading speed and readingaccuracy.Font type also significantly influenced the reading speed and readingaccuracy,but,when the font size reaches a certain level, reading speed is no longerincrease.The results of the second experiment showed that:(1)The main effect of wordspace is significant.(2)The main effect of line space is significant,too.(3)The combined effects of word space and line space is also significant.For individuals with MacularDisease, the fastest reading speed and the highest accuracy we measured is forpassages of text with1/2word space and double line space.According to the result,we can get the following conclusion:the change of fontsize,font type and text space of chinese text can improves reading performance inindividuals with macular disease.
