With the acceleration of economic globalization and the rapiddevelopment of China s economy, consecutive interpretation in businessnegotiations, academic conferences, press conferences and other activitiesplays an increasingly important role. As a matter of fact, to fulfill ourcommunication purpose, our requirements for interpreters have beenmore scrupulous and demanding than ever. However, recent studies showthat during bilingual communications interpreters act as a bridge, thestrategy of saying it all is unsuccessful, and sometimes evenimpractical. As one of the most effective means for language learning, communication strategies can help interpreters to overcome difficultiesthey encounter throughout their interpreting process, which are thought ofas indispensable to modern interpretation study. With the theory of communication strategies as its guiding principle, this paper selects some discourse materials from state-level pressconferences. Some commonly seen strategies for C-E consecutiveinterpretation are combed and analyzed in it; how communicationstrategies and expression are related to interpreting efficiency is discussed;two strategies omission and paraphrasing, and above all, as to why andhow they are used as well as what effects can be brought about areintroduced.Chapter One gives a general review of the research intocommunication strategies at home and abroad and then a description ofEffort Models to be combined with an actual interpreting, and then ajustification of the necessity of appropriate use of communicationstrategies on given occasions. Chapter Two analyzes the difficulties ofChinese-English consecutive interpreting and demonstrates the difficultyand problems in the process of Chinese-English interpreting. Chapter Three, focuses on two most important interpreting strategies omissionand paraphrasing. Chapter Four, based on the recorded transcriptions ofthe consecutive interpreting of Premier Li Keqiang Q&A in2015at theNPC closing session, is a case study to reveal the timing and effect of thetwo strategies of omission and paraphrasing applied. Chapter Fiveexpounds the active role of communication strategies adopted inconsecutive interpretation, their restrictions as well as limitations.Interpreting is a two-way language process, involving two languagesand three communicative parties, whose process is the encoding anddecoding the unit information delivery and reception, and re-encodingand re-decoding it. Therefore, borrowing and defining the communicationstrategies for interpreting are vital to interpreting theoretical research, andthey are also of great value to the improvement of the interpretationefficiency and quality to solve the overflowing information problems andrelieve interpreters psychological pressure. As interpretation finds anincreasingly wider application, it is hoped that the research of this paperwill promote the further development of interpreting teaching.
