The best-selling book, The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison is written by two cooperative authors. One is Professor Jeffrey Reiman from the Department of Philosophy and Religion at American University in Washington, D.C.; the other is Professor Paul Leighton in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology at Eastern Michigan University. The book, covering such multiple subjects as sociology, criminology and philosophy, contends that the USA criminal justice system is biased against the poor from top to bottom. In this thesis I discuss some problems occurring in the course of translating Chapter3of The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison in light of the theory of contextual functions. I explore the recent development of the theory, the linguistic characteristics of the book and the different functions in contexts. I also attach great importance to the analysis of some typical examples under the guidance of contextual functions, which is expected to enlighten me on the specific skills and strategies for the English-Chinese translation in the future.
