| In the process of the world towards globalization, English has become a world language. University is a place where proficient foreign language talents grow up. Thus, qualities of university EFL teachers mean a lot to the cultivation of foreign language talents. Moreover, some deficiencies exist in the university teaching evaluation system. Therefore, it is of great necessity to study qualities of proficient university EFL teachers.Students directly take part in the process of teaching, so the study of qualities of university EFL teachers from the perspective of students is vitally important. However, it seems that there were few studies of qualities of proficient university EFL teachers conducted from the perspective of students. Therefore, the research project, funded by Tianjin Philosophy and the Social Sciences Planning Scheme, aims to study the qualities of proficient university EFL teachers from the perspective of university students.As the second stage of the research project, the survey by questionnaire aims to testify the findings gained at the first stage of the research project. Namely, whether are professional qualities, professional ethics and personal traits the qualities that proficient university EFL teachers possess from the perspective of university students?This study adopted quantitative research method by distributing questionnaires among1000university students in eight universities in Tianjin, chosen through random sampling. With the help of team members of the research project, the distribution and collection of questionnaires were conducted. The whole process lasted for two months from2013May to July. A total number of962valid questionnaires was used for the data analysis conducted by the software SPSS13.0.The study results indicated that proficient university EFL teachers possessed high-level professional qualities, brilliant personal traits and high professional ethics. The findings gained at the first stage of the research project were verified. By further analyzing the results, the author found that qualities of proficient university EFL teachers are illustrated on the level of "being teachers" and "being persons" by university students.Based on the study results, implications for English education as well as for university teaching evaluation system are provided. For example, university EFL teachers should improve their teaching competence; communications between teachers and students in class and after class should be strengthened; EFL teaches should cultivate their moral sense and personalities; the contents of university teaching evaluation system should include teachers’ professional ethics and personal traits; ways to conduct teaching evaluation should be diverse. |
